Dorothy Savage had to grow up fast when at the age of only 13 her mother was diagnosed with cancer. She became her mother's caregiver until she passed away when Dorothy was only 19. She also had to deal with the loss of her sister, Jennifer, who died from cancer just a few short years ago. Like with her mother Savage moved in and helped care for her sister during the last several months of her life.
I would like to share with you what Savage says that she learned from the experience, "The lesson I learned from losing my sister is that 'faith that moves mountains' is not about getting your way. Having faith is facing being crucified or losing people that are the most precious to you and trusting God for the outcome. Too many people miss the real meaning of God's love - He's the most real and palpable in the most excoriating circumstances when He is all there is to hold on to. Anyone can love when you're getting your way."
Savage has proved that she's an overcomer now being happily married with two Yorkshire terriers, Emma and Wicket that the couple calls their, "children." Savage also maintains homes in both Alabama and New York City so that she can pursue both her musical and theatrical acting careers. Her NYC studio apartment is done all in pink and drew the attention of the TV network HGTV who recently stopped by to film it. Savage is also in the final steps of getting her pilot's license.
'Glorious Mess' is Dorothy Savage's debut release, although she did previously release an EP that included three classic Christmas favorites and a bonus preview track of her first radio single from 'Glorious Mess' - "As Long As It Takes."
'Glorious Mess' is made up of 12 songs that mix contemporary, pop, and a few rock edged beats in them. The album itself was two and a half years in the making and was produced by Marty Magahee (4HIM), with additional production credits going to Chris Omartian (Rubyz, Atomic Blonde) on the tracks, "As Long As It Takes" and "Finder of the Lost."
Savage also had help from some great song writers who contributed to the project including: Chris Sligh (American Idol), Dan Muckala (Backstreet Boys) Jill Philips, and Cindy Morgan.
The album also features a nice mixture of both up-tempo songs, driven mostly by guitar and drum parts, along with several more melodic piano driven tracks.
Highlight tracks include the previously mentioned first radio single, "As Long As It Takes." This is the most lively track found on 'Glorious Mess' and is filled with up-tempo pop meets dance beats. Lyrically the song deals with whether when we get hit with something bad in our life will let it take us down and give up or make the decision to tough it out and turn it into a learning type of situation.
"Faith Begins," is one of the more melodic tracks. The song deals with reaching that point in your faith life where you're willing to let go of whatever you’re facing in your life and leave it totally up to God as to what happens next. The song reminded me of the trust exercise that's often used when people, especially couples, are having trust type of issues and they have one person stand directly behind the other one and then tell the person in front to just let go and fall backwards, unlike people though God will always be there to catch you.
"Beyond All Measure," starts off with a melodic piano part but builds up the pace as it moves along with pop beats. The song deals with creating an impossible standard or goal for ourselves that is sure to lead to failure and disappointment in our life. The song talks about letting go and placing it before God letting Him rebuild you when you feel broken down.
"I Am," is a nice acoustic guitar lead mellow track that was written as a love song to God. Lyrically the song deals with God's unconditional love for us.
Dorothy Savage has a lot of wise and helpful things to say in her songs that make up 'Glorious Mess,' along with some very entertaining music.
